7 Things to Do Before Your Next Road Trip

There’s nothing like the thrill of a road trip with the windows down, playlist on, and the open road ahead. Whetheyou’re heading to the beach, mountains, or a new city, planning is half the fun. But before you pack snacks and map out stops, make sure your car and tech are ready for the journey.

Here’s your expert road trip checklist to keep your adventure safe, smooth, and stress-free.

1. Start with the Basics: Wipers, Tires, and Brakes

Your car’s safety essentials deserve top priority. If your wiper blades leave streaks or squeak, replace them before you go. Visibility mattersespecially during sudden rainstorms.

Next, check your tires. Look for cracks, bulges, or worn tread, and don’t forget the spare. Use the quarter test: insert a quarter into the tread with Washington’s head down. If you see the top of his head, it’s time for new tires. Also, confirm tire pressure matches the PSI listed in your owner’s manual or on the driver-side door jamb.

Finally, test your brakes. Grinding noises, vibrations, or any pulling to one side are red flags. Schedule a brake inspection if anything feels off.

2. Top Off Fluids and Check Alignment

Your car relies on fluids to keep everything running smoothly. Before you leave, check the below:

  • Engine oil: Get it changed if the dipstick is dark and dirty, and or if the level is low.

  • CoolantThe fluid should be between the minimum and maximum marks of the radiator to prevent overheating in summer heat.

  • Transmission fluid: Fill up if the level is too low as it’s essential for smooth shifting.

  • Windshield washer fluidFor clear visibilityit’s best practice to keep this filled.

Also, pay attention to alignment. If your car drifts left or right, have it checked. Poor alignment can cause uneven tire wear and make driving at high speeds more difficult.

3. Inspect Belts and Hoses

Pop the hood and look for cracks, fraying, or leaks. Hoses should feel firm, not soft or blistered. Pay special attention to the serpentine belt as it powers critical components like the alternator and air conditioning. A broken belt or loose hose can turn your dream trip into a roadside nightmare.

4. Plan for EV Charging

Driving an electric vehicle? Road trips are absolutely doable, but planning still matters. Use apps like PlugShare or ChargePoint to map charging stations along your route. Carry a portable charging cable and know your car’s range. Fast-charging stations are expanding, but rural areas may still have gapsso plan ahead.

5. Leverage Smart Tech

Modern road trips rely on more than paper maps. Download AI-powered navigation apps that optimize routes based on traffic, weather, and EV charging needs. Consider a smart dash cam with warnings like fatigue alerts and cloud backup for added safety. Lastly, don’t forget to download offline maps for areas with poor connectivity.

6. Pack a Digital Emergency Kit

Beyond jumper cables, think tech. Bring portable chargers, solar power banks, and travel safety apps like the Emergency App by the American Red Cross for local contacts and alerts. A small first-aid kit and a digital health card can also come in handy.

7. Budget Smarter

With rising travel costs, financial prep matters. Use apps to track fuel prices or find EV charging deals. If you’re still paying off your car, consider refinancing your auto loan with Space Coast Credit Union (SCCU) which may lower monthly payments depending on your rate and term to free up cash for your trip.
